That's his prerogative

Sorry, couldn't help myself.

I've always wondered how Lou could square his political beliefs with his role model persona, considering the percentage of his charges who were black. And how his players could square everything from their perspective.

Holtz could have just been a successful college coach, but he leaned into his image as a role model... and he was great at it. Inspirational, funny, serious, formative... I won't take that away from him.

But he very clearly held troubling views on race. Remember, he campaigned for Jesse Helms in '83. So his politics are not a late-in-life, retired and watching Fox news development. And that undercuts everything else he did, said or preached. Which is a damn shame.
