Bobby Brown didn't pull any punches there.
And he wasn't just talking about himself - he said he'd talked with a lot of other players and that they'd "literally shed tears" watching the "hero they'd loved and adored" call racial protests "whining". He said they basically "watched (Lou) die right in front of their eyes."
I think that there were quite a few players with extremely complicated feelings about Lou. He said that if Holtz doesn't address it, former players will start saying "not MY coach". I don't know that Holtz ever addressed any of it, or really cared to.
Honestly, we can excuse a lot of Lou's politics about being old or whatever. But his quote about the racial justice protests -with the context of his former player Demetrius Dubose being shot by cops - is not really the kind of thing we can excuse.
"I think there’s an awful lot of things that happen in this country, but I want you to know, I’ve been unfairly ticketed. I was given a ticket when I didn’t exceed the speed limit because I was coaching at one school and the patrol officer graduated from the other and he let me know he was bitter about this fact—that happens in life."
Yes, Lou. It's exactly like the time you were unfairly given a speeding ticket. I'm sure the cop saw you go past and was like 'THAT'S LOU I"M GONNA GET HIM."
