He is an abject lesson in what it means to succeed at ND
And how hard it is to maintain success. He was famously needy for affirmation, which led to his untimely departure. But he set the standard for modern success and his warm embrace of Freeman no doubt aided his growth in the job.
He always had very conservative, and sometimes off-putting, politics, which seemed to worsen with age. But he loved ND and, until Freeman, we never had anyone quite like that again. You can say Weis, but he was such a self important person, even with the short term success he had, that it obscured his affection for the university.
