But then the Steelers turned around and hired McCarthy. And seemingly doubled down on Rodgers.

I'm not sure that Freeman himself didn't dodge a bullet there. Hell, given that sequence of events, I'm not sure that the Steelers would have been interested in Freeman, even if his agent made it clear that he'd love to be considered.
