This is an interesting and loaded question
The quick answer seems like it should be "yes?" Otherwise, it would seem like a school impinging on the benefits of other students and eventually (maybe in the residual) you exhaust the capital resources.
But it's not that easy because sports bring a social benefit to the students, to the alumni, to the community. And the federal government demands certain funding for sports (Title IX) so you can't always distill it to economics.
The more we open the floodgates to capitalism the harder this becomes. Because we still impose a structure over this system which doesn't reflect meritocratic principles.
I am not sure that collegiate sports have ever had less direction or leadership than they do now.
