Interesting insight
I had wondered if that were the case (splitting it to stop the run of dominance) because unlike PSU's run a while back, it seemed that ND usually had one down weapon on either the men's or women's side but was able to cover for it with 5 really strong weapons - sort of like how Columbia's men's epee only marshalled 16 points this year. So it would make sense that they'd split it and see if that brought some other teams into the mix.
On the other hand, I had long thought it past time for this due to the Northwestern problem (I know a few other schools only have women, but NW is the top team in that category) as well as St. John's historically strong men and middling women's team. Figured maybe the NCAA was just looking at programs like those and giving them the shot they really never had over the last three decades.

The 2007 ND-UCLA game was a once in a lifetime experience, I hope
