The Head Ball Coach always knew how to tweak. And no, the Urban Meyer-Notre Dame talks will never vanish.
South Carolina Coach Steve Spurrier spent almost an hour on the Paul Finebaum Radio Network this week, and during the session he brought up Urban Meyer's love for Notre Dame without a cue.
Right after saying Meyer is "no question one of the best coaches in the country," he segued into Urban's "dream job," Notre Dame.
"They still got that rumor going down there, Paul, that if he has one more big year, he might be the Notre Dame coach," Spurrier said.
After Finebaum said Notre Dame folks are convinced Meyer will be their next coach as early as next year, Spurrier referred to how he read about Meyer telling someone about "his dream job to coach at Notre Dame," something Meyer told a Miami radio station in December. "He had an opportunity 4-5 years ago, he didn't take it," Spurrier said.
Yes, we know. But will he leave for the Irish? Spurrier is non-committal, but he shed light on the difficulty of staying somewhere too long after winning big.
"It'd be surprising if he left, but who knows?" Spurrier said. "He's accomplished so much. I left after 12 years because I just said 'Hey, I've done enough. Try something else.' He may get to the point where he needs to try something else. Who knows?"
Interesting stuff. Could Spurrier be giving us a true glimpse into Meyer's current thinking? Listen to Spurrier talk about Meyer and Notre Dame here. His comments on the issue are about three-fourths through the interview with Finebaum.
Spurrier also addressed Urban Meyer's comments about ex-Gators being with him or against him, likely a dig at ex-Gators quarterback Shane Matthews, a radio host who has been critical of Florida's offense in the past.
"I think Shane has calmed down his opinion about Florida's pass offense," Spurrier said.
Spurrier said both guys are at fault "a little bit."
"As an alumnus as a fan, you can complain about stuff that happens, but you still have to be behind yoru team," Spurrier said.
