And now that I've read it 3 times in different reports, it seems accepted that he has 4 years of eligibility in any sport left over.

I just find the crossover between the graduate student rule, the 5 for 4 rule, and the cross sport rules. It's like this is just not really defined at all, so he'd probably be able to do it.
