a slap in the face of reality about the talent level among this years fourth and fifth year seniors. The one sure thing is that Bruton will get drafted. The only other guy that I've seen get any mention at all in terms of even being on the draft radar is Turkovich. This will cement the fact that the recruiting class of 2004 will end up with zero draft picks. The patchwork class of 2005 will end up being more productive, in terms of both starters at ND and NFL draft picks. For some perpsective, UConn will likely have 4 drafted, Nevada 2, Pitt will have have about 4, UNC will have about 4 or so...and SC will probably have 3 or 4 first rounders and a total of about 10.

- 17 players
- Nine transfers (Ferrine, Hoskins, Incarnato, Jabbie, Nicolas, Talley, Vernaglia, Wolke, Vaughn), but only three to Division I-A (Hoskins, Nicolas and Vaughn) and only two to BCS conference schools (Nicolas and Vaughn). Nicolas started 36 games at NT for Colorado. Vaughn made 26 catches for 245 yards and 0 TDs in his Louisville career. Hoskinshad a good junior year at C. Michigan but rushed for only 145 yards as a senior.
- Three players who made what I would consider meaningful contributions (Crum, Lambert and Walker)
- One player who at least got a sniff from the NFL (Walker)
- Zero draft picks
It's not only the worst class in ND history, it's in contention for the worst class in major college history. And now that we know how badly it turned out, and combined with an only slightly better 2005 class, it puts our 2007-08 struggles in a more forgivable light (though not totally forgivable). Virtually every BCS conference school had more upperclass talent than ND did in 2007.

Note also that while it applies to the weakness of the class, it's not really indicative to say there were 7 transfers. Jabbie, Ferrine, an Vernaglia are no different than a guy like Anastasio from the previous class -- they weren't granted fifth years. That says enough about their relative worth on the field; that they chose to play their fifth year elsewhere isn't a slight on the ND program.
Incidentally, Incarnato is probably the most interesting of the "talent evaluation" examples:
2004 - redshirted at Notre Dame.
2005 - sat out at Indiana after transferring.
2006 - backup who saw no time at Indiana.
2007 - sat out at UMass after transferring again.
2008 - played in 4 games as a backup at UMass.

What's more is that this could be the lowest two-year yield in the school's history.

That's 1-4 over a two year period.
If anybody is left doubting the two-year talent hole that Willingham left us, this should hammer it home.
