Trump may have called, I have no idea (it’s hard when literally everything he ever says is a lie), but all red cards are reviewed by committee in just about every competition: they meet to determine whether it merits additional punishment and, in rare cases, to overturn or ameliorate the punishment.

Do I think FIFA corruption could be at play to avoid “spoiling” the WC for one of the hosts? Totally plausible. But I think it is literally Trump Derangement Syndrome to root against the US because a standard review of a soccer red card found that it had been given with aid from a VAR procedural issue and used a rare-but-on-the-books option to effectively grant probation pending good behavior. (Note that it’s so within their purview that it’s not even be the first time it was used at this WC — they also waived off two of Ronaldo’s three game violent conduct suspension.)
