“F— it, we’re going to 76 teams.”

Seems like there will be even more tournament games not to care about: https://www.espn.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/48621117/sources-ncaa-basketbal...

They're determined to make college basketball as unwatchable

as the NBA. College basketball had for so many years been a joy and March Madness was the greatest college sporting event. The portal and NIL are sucking the talent out of the mid-majors as every above-average starter departs for a payday.

The extra 8 teams will almost all be 18-15 (or thereabouts) teams from big conferences

They are adding Tuesday and Wednesday games

Does anyone watch those games currently? SMH.

I'd rather have the BB tournament go to 76 than the

football playoff go to 24 (which is inevitable, per the II podcast).

If a few more mid-major BB teams get to play a "tournament" game, then that's a good thing. Unfortunately, it will probably skew towards undeserving major conference teams. At the end of the day, this won't diminish the essence of the tournament from the Sweet Sixteen on.

For football, with honest and impartial decision-makers, 8 (based on historical standards) is more teams than deserve to be there. 12, fine. 16 at the outside. 24 is totally bananas.

I fear that the mid-majors added

will be dwarfed by the slack-ass motherfucking 8-10 SEC and B1G teams whose ADs and coaches want to fluff that CV with another "NCAA tournament invite".

And 76 on the women's side is just staggeringly unjustifiable.

Given that it's my hometown, I love the show that Dayton has put on over the years for the early games and know how much pride they take in hosting. But my inclination is to start boycotting everything prior to Thursday, and I hope that many other fans (non-degenerate-gambler flight) will do the same and shove it back up the NCAAs greedy asshole.

This!! 1,000x this.

You don't add extra teams because the folks are clamoring for more Bucknell after they lost the Patriot League championship and deserve to go.

You do it for a shit ass Auburn squad whose dad sits in a chair whining about other mid-majors. Undeserving Indiana too. It's about money not increasing access to other teams.

Did any mid majors make the second weekend this year?

No but, there were 6 total "upsets" in the entire tournament

by Domer99, John Wesley Powell's Expedition Island, Wednesday, April 29, 2026, 12:19 (28 days ago) @ Grantland

Upset being defined by the NCAA as seeds 5 or more lower than the opponent. So, these past few tournaments have been as chalky as ever. 4 of those 6 games involved Texas and Iowa collecting 2 wins.

Yeah, that's not exactly the foundation for increasing the number of mid-majors but watching teams finish below .500 in conference "earning" their way in doesn't excite me either.

Makes me wonder how much this expansion is the result of

college sports gambling.

Is there a tie-in that’s obvious that I’m missing? More games = more gamblers losing? And that pays for it?

I didn't know they were expanding the Womens' too. Yes,

more than 32 teams there is totally pointless. Every year, that's the chalkiest tournament imaginable.

Per Title IX they feel they have to --

going into that tournament, few teams below a 2 seed have a realistic chance of winning it all. The fact that the shocking upset was #1 UConn getting taken down by another #1 seed was the big news out of that tournament tells you all you need to know.
