as being one of the best RB coaches/developers in the game and in ND history. And yet his RB recruiting and offers were puzzling to put it mildly.

I guess Deland conditioned me to worry more about how the sausage tastes as opposed to how it's made (ie. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)
