Not just in the White House. Wall Street too.

"“In the whole written history of the strait, it has never been closed, ever,” said JPMorgan Chase analyst Natasha Kaneva. “To me, it was not just the worst-case scenario. It was an unthinkable scenario.”"

"U.S. 'dismayed' at Israeli strikes on Iranian oil depots"

Just yesterday Chris Wright (energy secretary) was deflecting Tapper's questions about this, saying yeah the air quality might be bad for a couple days over Teheran but think of the 1979 hostage crisis.

Ope. Trump's calling "Game off!" and hoping everyone will...

just go along with it. Spoke to CBS and said the war is basically complete. Apparently "way ahead" of schedule.

Perhaps a dumb question

by bobbywal, Oak Park, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, 06:22 (141 days ago) @ domer.mq

Because I cannot wrap my head around the forces that drive these things, but why do the markets respond SO quickly to every single one of his utterances?

And why are they so damn, generally speaking, optimistic?

Not sure that Iran will go along with it, but slowly walking away is definitely the best option right now. Such a stupid, destructive thing to do.

Is there somewhere to apply for a position in the new Department of the Straight of Hormuz? I'd like to get in at the ground level.

We're also not enamored with their choice of leader

by BPH, San Diego, Monday, March 09, 2026, 11:07 (141 days ago) @ Jay

Did the Iranian people not hear Trump when he urged them to rise up, overthrow their government and form a democracy? Too bad, it was the best chance he'll ever give them.

OT: but not really. We just blew up another boat off the

FUCK THIS MOTHER FUCKER.

The word "honor" has been in my head a lot

by Regular Joseph @, Monday, March 09, 2026, 12:33 (141 days ago) @ Grantland

as in he has no honor.

I don't even know if I know what it means, but in trying to define my disgust with Trump and Hegseth and Rubio and Bovino and the rest. I keep coming back to honor, which is not a concept I thought I held very dear, but maybe is.

These motherfuckers are rejecting any idea of reason, justice, humanity. They're just fucking around like psychotic 12 year olds torturing cats. They have no idea the consequences their actions have for humanity, not just the specific people they wantonly kill, but the way they destroy the idea of anything mattering.

I read that the attack on the school in Iran was because it is known to have a lot of kids from the IRGC Navy, and they double tapped because they wanted to parents to come try to save their kids. I have no idea if it's true, but its exactly the kind of think Hegseth would seem to be into.

We can't be in political conversation with these people. They don't accept our premises for society and government. Anything less than a repudiation of the status quo that allows this falls short of the mark.

That's OK, we're creating an environmental disaster too

by Jack @, Monday, March 09, 2026, 07:47 (142 days ago) @ domer.mq

Do they really think they can bomb Iran's entire oil infrastructure? "Morons" isn't a strong enough word to describle these people.

It’s sad that we have to re-learn the hard way why we

by atxND, Sunday, March 08, 2026, 20:30 (142 days ago) @ domer.mq

as an advanced civilized society previously valued things like competence, expertise, diligence, planning, patience, leadership, decency, etc., because many many people stand to suffer in the meantime. Oh well, back to numb the pain scrolling TikTok and Chinamaxxing…

That's an optimistic take...

by nedhead @, Sunday, March 08, 2026, 20:59 (142 days ago) @ atxND

I think there's an assumption implicit in your post, one which you may not even believe, that we will relearn those things. This is similar to the suggestion by many, and criticized by Tooze, that Europe is in an interregnum, ie, there will be a subsequent rise.

I'm not as optimistic about the US (and even moreso Europe), despite being the extreme global optimist here. I think that there are too many fundamental problems in governance in the US that are impossible to address.
