some stuff on the DL

I think too much handwringing is going on about 3-4 versus 4-3. The truth is we used a number of different combos on the DL last year. Sometimes they were opponent-driven (lighter vs Purdue, heavier vs Stanford), sometimes situational (obvious passing situations, short yardage, goal line, etc), and still other times linemen were rotated to keep people fresh.

We are likely to use up to seven or eight different linemen and ends this year, and in various combos and alignments depending on opponent, situation, and energy replenishment.

Here are a number of DL combos we used in 2008. Even this is superficial; within these groupings, alignments and techniques may have varied. But this should give an idea of the various combinations we used.

Players who saw time on the DL:

9 Johnson
45 Fleming
53 Richardson
56 Neal
90 Ryan
91 Nwankwo
94 Brown
95 I. Williams
96 Kuntz

Reading from left to right along the line:

56 96 94 90
94 95 96 90
-- 94 96 90
56 9 94 90
56 9 94 45
94 95 96 90
-- 96 94 90
56 9 96 45
9 96 90 --
56 9 96 90
45 9 95 53
9 94 56 --
56 96 94 45
-- 9 96 45
45 9 94 90
53 9 95 45
53 9 94 90
56 96 95 94
45 9 96 53
-- 9 96 53
56 95 45 --
96 95 91 94
94 96 9 90
45 9 94 53
etc.

If we want to forecast something, let's figure out who's going to replace Brown and Kuntz. Each of them appeared a lot, and mostly on the inside, with Brown occasionally lining up on the end. If we agree that we need 8-9 players to fill out the rotation, and we know we have seven (or eight):

9 Johnson
45 Fleming (possible move to linebacker?)
53 Richardson
56 Neal
+89 Lewis-Moore
90 Ryan
91 Nwankwo
95 I. Williams

that leaves two spots to fill to take over for Kuntz and Brown.

one nit

Hasn't Fleming always been listed as a linebacker (i.e. this wouldn't be a switch for him).

You're pretty much spot on, though. I bet we'll probably run "4-3 personnel" (EJ, KLM, 2 true tackles, 3 backers w/o Neal/Fleming) against power teams, power looks, and likely running downs while "3-4 personnel" (EJ, KLM, 1 tackle, 3 backers + Neal/Fleming as end/OLB) against spread teams, spread looks, and likely passing downs.

yep, he was listed as an OLB

but he played with his hand down on every snap as far as I could tell, which essentially made him part of the 4-man front.

That's very good to hear.

I would assume some combination of Cwynar, Hafis, and Newman will be able to rotate in.

Maybe things aren't so bad, after all...

Word is that Hafis & KLM

both almost saw the field last year. I'm hoping that they both come in as early contributors. Also, and some of you have seen my opinion on this (ad nauseum perhaps), I believe we have a Jeff Alm, out-of-nowhere candidate in Nwankwo. Trevor Laws, in particular, is very high on this kid. Maybe he puts it all together this year.

It will be interesting to see if the change in coaching personality brings out something we haven't seen from these guys. Maybe even Mullen.

I suppose Stockton could get an earnest look, too

He's already on campus, and if he proves himself better than Hafis and Newman...

Then there's Paddy Mullen. Poor guy.

Five contenders to fill two spots doesn't sound bad.

Then you realize that four are either redshirt or true freshman.

the usual suspects

Mullen, I think, is basically a preferred walk-on at this point.

Then there's Nwankwo, who was really a backup last year, even though he did play some. He would seem to be next in line.

Hafis, Newman, and Cwynar: three redshirts. At least they've had a year to develop.

Stockton, true freshman.

Finally, we could always sneak Bryant Young back onto the field.

Makes you wonder if

some of the troubles we have had at TE wouldn't have existed if we had recruited some DTs along the way.

The way I recall it, Mullen was a TE/DL recruit who was slotted at DL because we missed out on everyone else (save Kallen Wade) and we also landed Konrad Reuland and Yeatman. Had Mullen stuck at TE, he might have made an ideal blocking TE, especially in short yardage situations.
