ND Establishing An Athletic Performance Division

Notre Dame announced Tuesday it is starting a new division of its athletic department -- an athletic performance department.

The department's goal is to coordinate enhancement in strength and conditioning, athletic training and physical therapy, sports medicine, nutrition, sports psychology and anything else that might change an athlete's welfare and performance.

It'll be headed up by Mike Karwoski, who had been Notre Dame's associate athletic director for compliance.

"The goals and expectations of athletics at Notre Dame necessitate finding ways for our student-athletes to optimize their efforts when they compete at the championship level of our programs," athletic director Jack Swarbrick said in a statement released by the university. "That doesn't happen by accident.

"Mike's assignment will be to work within all these different areas so that we can provide every opportunity for those student-athletes to be at their very best when they take the field.

"If we can help them become just a little bit faster, quicker, stronger and more confident, then they and our programs will have better chances to attain success at the highest levels."

Replacing Karwoski in compliance will be Notre dame associate vice president and senior counsel Jill Bodensteiner.

Bodensteiner went to Notre Dame as an undergrad, law school at Washington University in St. Louis and picked up an MBA from Notre Dame in 2008. She is also a member of the bar in Illinois and Indiana.
