Fellow Bloggers on this Board....

I just had an idea to pass the time this summer before football starts. It was sparked by conversation over on RH at NDN today.

Once Phil Steele is released this spring, I thought it might be fun to create a pool of players from the expected depth charts of the ND team and all of their opponents for the season. Then each blog, or individual bloggers (or hell, I'd be happy to open it up to anyone on this board, but we'd need to set some cap on entrants) could participate in a mock draft, assembling their own teams from that pool of players. So I guess at maximum we could take 13 teams, since we'll want to assemble full teams for each entrant.

Then we can sort of use the results to figure out ND's strength of talent versus the opposition (ND should do pretty darn well here, I'd think). Who knows, maybe we could even create a fantasy game for the season with the results.

Just throwing the idea out there, but if you're interested, reply here or e-mail me, and we can sort of hash out the details.

I like this.

I am tentatively in charge of opposition overviews here -- I've done Nevada and Michigan so far. But I am getting killed at work, and I'd appreciate any opportunity to steal from the efforts of others. If this mock draft were shared among sites, the ensuing discussion might even obviate the need to do a couple team overviews.

Although I still must tackle Purdue. Nothing excites me more than a town uglier than South Bend, full of students uglier than could be found in a women's pro bowling league, and a stadium that would scoffed at by most Texas high schools. Purdue is as interesting as a New Release Tuesday headlined by Scott Stapp.

we don't even need to wait for Steele

At the minimum, I think we know as much, if not more, about the regular ND opponents than he does. We can grab the final spring depth charts, maybe do some quick looks to see what injured starters are missing from those depth charts, and go from there.

That way we wouldn't need to wait until June or whenever it is when he puts out the magazine.

That's true.

I'm gonna be busy working the rest of the week, but this weekend I'll hash out some more details.

If you do open it to everyone, I'm in.

Great. And if you want to write about your picks...

You could guest-post at HLS if you'd like.

I would definitely be in for that. Thanks!

sounds intriguing - how do we do it?

I'll have to investigate the options...

Might be able to handle it all just in google docs, as far as data goes.

The draft could get pretty interactive. Make 22 days worth of it, or 11 days worth of it, 2 picks per day. Then each participant could do a write up on their site of who they picked, why, etc... (Instant material!)

Gonna have to think it through more, but I'm quite open to suggestions.

sounds like a great way to get through the slow times

during the summer.

I've participated in a Pac 10, Big Ten, ND fantasy football league. That part should be the easiest.

Harder part seems to be-- how would we approach defenses? Draft a whole team, or individual players?

I do think that it'd be a great way for fans to "get to know" all of the opponents' starters.
