goodman at QB

A lot has been made of the "gimmicky" nature of Goodman's reps at quarterback.

Is it possible that Weis is really grooming him as the bona fide backup quarterback for when Clausen leaves?

I posted some prospective QB depth charts here a few weeks ago. The big hole is backup to Crist in 2011 (or next year, if Clausen goes early). Ideally it would be a roster player familiar with the system and not somebody from this year's recruiting class.

Perhaps Goodman is being groomed?

Weis's comments from yesterday

Is Goodman considered the number three quarterback after today"˜s practice?

"I like the way he was throwing it. Obviously, we didn't put him into too many situations right there. But just watching him from senior year, when he got moved junior year from wide receiver to quarterback because they needed him at quarterback, and watching him play, you had to anticipate that you could probably do this with him. Now he is definitely in the top six receivers, probably higher than that so first things first. How is he going to get on the field the quickest? Right now, he is going to get on the field quicker at wide receiver than he is at quarterback. But could we play him at quarterback? I think he answered some of our questions today."

Are you going to continue to rep him at quarterback in August?

"We would rep him more as time went on, especially when we have more healthy bodies at wide receiver. That's one of the reasons why we haven't done this earlier because Goody has been running with the first group a good portion of the spring."

Here are the WRs...

Floyd
Tate
Kamara
Walker
Goodman
Parris
West
Gallup
Evans*
Toma*

Maybe it depends on how good Evans is when he reports. Also, it's hard to believe that George West was a starter at WR in 2007 with David Grimes. He's gone from #1 to probably #7. Weis has talked in the past about how typically the top 6 are the ones who play, and there's no way that West is in that group given the play of the guys above him.

that's exactly what made me wonder

if this wasn't a more long-range thing. Perhaps they've made the determination that Montana isn't going to be a capable backup to Crist come 2010-11, and instead of throwing a younger guy in there, why not look at Goodman now and see if he can develop. Just a theory, obviously. But otherwise I'm having a hard time seeing the benefit of all this Goodman planning.

I've had a simpler theory

What if Clausen and Crist get hurt? Or Crist throws 5 straight INTs in his first game after Clausen gets hurt?
It happens. Oregon ended up playing their 4th and 5th string QBs last season and competed pretty damn well.
I take it as Weis being prepared for anything and seeing a pretty good athlete who can't crack the rotation at WR so why not take out a little insurance policy?
But sure this could also be a 2011 move to have a 2nd string ready or even 2010 in the unlikely event Clausen goes pro.

Jay, by the way I like this site. Straight football, no silliness, no drama.
