Returning might not have been 'solely' his choice to make,
but I'm sure he contemplated resigning after USC...which obviously would have been his choice to make.
If his wife and kids were miserable putting up with ND fans (which I couldn't really blame them for, considering the fact that I was miserable trying to put up with my fellow ND fans), I don't think it's unreasonable to assume that Charlie asked them if he should consider resigning and heading back to the NFL.
