Put on your parsing hat

From Charlie's Twitter account:

Just watched scrimmage tape from Wednesday. Inside running game greatly favored offense, while outside running game greatly favored defense.

It means run right at a defense if they're faster than you.

Taking the twitter at face value, of course.

ND will have speed to burn on Defense, and Weis will drive certain ND fans bonkers because he wont want to get into grinder games with opponents, because our D will be susceptible to grinding down.

Let the gnashing of teeth and wailing begin.

makes sense considering it's a Tenuta defense

The way to beat a Tenuta defense is to run right at them and not around them.

The beautiful spring conundrum.

That statement means one or more of the following:

- Our tackles struggle.
- Our defensive ends are talented and great at stretching out runs.
- The core of our offensive line are doing a great job opening holes in the middle.
- The relative inexperience of the Front 7 is beginning to bear rotten fruit.

I think it's simpler than even that.

Our defense is as fast as it's been in quite some time. And our DBs are very, very good Thus, our pursuit on plays to the perimeter has a chance of being exceptional. At the scrimmage on the 28th there were several times where it looked like there was a lane to the outside and either McCarthy or Harrison came crashing in and blew the play up. And no matter how talented and tenacious our young DL are, they are still young and lack some strength. Our interior OL SHOULD be winning the majority of those battles.

That was my thought.

Inside running on offense is very much about strength and attitude (as cliche as that is). Technique and scheme is important, but not nearly as it is on stretch/outside runs. It's not all that surprising that an athletic but inexperienced defense is stopping the outside run better than the inside run against a big, experienced (but often technically flawed) OL.
