Behold my substance bomb.

Jay and I knew from the start that Swarbrick would be a good hire.

I don't mind that he didn't jettison Charlie to hire Brian Kelly, nor do I mind that he thought long and hard about Charlie and isn't afraid to admit it. I love the new thinking he brought to the hockey arena. I like that we're hearing about talks with Miami instead of Rutgers.

I also feel good about ND's representation at the big table when it comes time to talk about whatever new BCS iteration is next proposed, or when ND needs to again negotiate with NBC or apparel providers.

I like this guy.

the whole posture of the department has changed

It went from "Sorry, can't do it" to "Heck yeah, we'd love to play you guys!"

Damon Evans (Georgia's AD) should be on the horn pronto. Ditto Mal Moore. Both of those guys pursued us in the past few years and were rebuffed.

Why the previous position?

That's what I still don't understand. Why would the school deliberately avoid high-profile matchups in favor of rinky-dink opponents?

straight cash, I think

Also fear...fear of reaching beyond your grasp and doing something bold. As Pat has pointed out, Kevin White never really made a deal outside of his comfort zone, whether it be the Big East lineup, or deals with any ADs that hadn't already worked for him at one time or another. The "path of least resistance" was his mantra. The mindset was evident not just in scheduling, but also the BCS capitulation, demands from NBC, demands from the Big East (for 3 games per year), etc.

There's also that "new Ivy" thing too.

The AD works and lives among a lot of academics that don't care at all about ND football but do care a lot about getting teased by their friends at Yale and Stanford for taking a "silly game" so seriously.

White didn't receive his immunity spray to that because you only get that when you get your ND sheepskin.
