Kelly decided to focus on defense
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't Kelly comment that he wanted to emphasize recruiting defense when he became coach? He claimed his offense could generate enough points. He did not anticipate inheriting one of the biggest busts in recent ND QB history and an absolute stiff in Tommy Rees.
ND lost games under Weis because defense was an after thought. Weis believed his offense could win every game for him. Kelly recognized that ND's defense needed a significant upgrade. So far, Kelly has remained on track. Personally, I would rather the defense be more aggressive in the secondary. I want CBs who can jam WRs at the line and play bump n' run coverage.
